Summer in the Chapel

July 8 | Big Tom ... Even A Preacher Can Have Fun

bigtomPlan to join us on Sunday, July 8th at 9:30 or 11 am in the Chapel to hear some of the funniest and craziest stories Big Tom has experienced in over 90 amazing years.

At 91 years of age and stronger than ever, Reverand Thomas N. Brittain, known as Big Tom says, "You need to be in the life of the church and have the church in the center of your life."  His beautiful marriage to his beloved wife, Jean Casey Brittain of 70 years, remains one of the greatest love stories people will ever witness. The couple grew up in Inman, went to the same high school, and never dated anyone except each other. Big Tom shares the story of how they met, when he says, " Our pastures met with a barbed-wire fence between them, my cow would jump over the fence and go into their barn and I had to go get the cow, and then it was a four-mile walk back. I'd see her standing on her back porch, and I would wave and yell 'hello' and eventually got up enough nerve to talk to her." They dated for three years and married in 1947. Big Tom has served six churches, was the district superintendent in Charleston, served as vice-president of Epworth Children's Home in Columbia, and still works, just about every day.  People say the nicest things about Big Tom such as "He's always fair, never judges, he always accepts people just as they are."

July 15 | Duncan Winburn ... Life in a Cage

duncanPlan to join us on Sunday, July 15th at either 9:30 or 11 am in the Chapel to hear Duncan Winburn share an inspirational and thought-provoking message.

Rev. Monica is the proud aunt of Duncan Winburn, her 18 year old nephew.  Duncan did his first speaking engagement as an American Red Cross ambassador at the age of eight, and has since given talks on Cerebral Palsy (which he has as a disability), the importance of exercise, nutrition, and giving blood, the destructiveness of human trafficking, and also has given motivational speeches to many groups in healthcare.  He’s spoken to several church groups and preached on how the story of Jesus healing the man that came through the roof really isn’t about that guy at all.  It’s about the faith of the four people that got him there.  Duncan has a very unique perspective on the world, which shone through in an event called “Star Day”.  Duncan rallied the fine arts students to plan a day of the arts for the special education students.  Over one hundred people participated.  In recognition of his service, The Riley Institute has awarded Westwood High School a grant so that “Star Day” will be Duncan’s legacy at his high school.  Duncan will attend Furman University in the fall where he plans to keep developing his interests in advocacy and helping people.
